Amica is the top home insurance company for 2025, holding the spot for the second year in a row. State Farm and Allstate follow in second and third. All three companies held their positions from last year. We didn’t include regional companies in the main ranking, but if we had, Erie Insurance would have landed in second place; it’s the top regional insurer once again in 2025.

Finding the best homeowners insurance company for your home can be challenging, especially in today’s changing market where rates are increasing and coverage can be harder to find.

To help you narrow the field of home insurance companies, we gathered and analyzed the top home insurers’ rate data, financial stability scores and complaint records. We polled their customers to determine which companies provide the best customer service, claims handling and policy offerings. We also asked respondents if they trust their insurance company, if they plan to renew their current policy and about their experience with their insurer’s website and app.

Based on that data and other important insurance metrics, we rated the Best Home Insurance Companies of 2025 and gave each from one to five stars, with five stars being the highest ranking. Because some insurance companies shine in particular categories, we’ve listed the best companies for cheap rates, ease of service and more in addition to the top-rated home insurance companies overall.

A list of the top homeowners insurance companies and a review of each is below.

Choosing the best insurance company takes research, and knowing what to look for is important.

“Your insurance company and its representatives should answer your questions and handle your claims fairly, efficiently and quickly. You can get a feel for whether this is the case by talking to other customers who have used a particular company or agent,” says Mark Friedlander, corporate communications director for industry trade group the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I). “Your state insurance department will be able to tell you if the insurance company you are considering doing business with had many consumer complaints about its service relative to the number of policies it sold.”

What are the best home insurance companies?

Amica is the No. 1 home insurance company for 2025, followed by State Farm and Allstate. These three companies held their positions from last year.

For 2025, Progressive jumped from No. 7 to No. 4, while Nationwide dropped one spot to No. 5. Farmers and Travelers dropped a spot, finishing at No. 6 and No. 7, respectively.

All the top companies on this list have pros and cons, and all are good home insurance companies. However, when compared on everything from customer survey results to National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) complaint data, some came out better than others.

Here are Insure.com’s Best Homeowners Insurance Companies for 2025 with their rankings.

Here’s how the rankings would have looked with regional carriers included.

In the fall of 2024, Insure.com surveyed more than 1,750 people about insurance. The survey was conducted by online market research company Slice MR. Respondents were asked to rank their home insurers.

The editors then selected – based on the number of survey responses – the top companies for further evaluation.

Our editors gathered and analyzed the companies’ rate data, National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ complaint scores, AM Best financial stability grades and more to make their selection of the nation’s best insurance companies. The full methodology for the rankings is found at the bottom of the page.

“You buy insurance to protect you and your family financially and provide peace of mind. Select a company that is likely to be financially sound for many years and can pay its claims. We suggest you check the financial strength ratings of insurers you are considering. An agent can help you obtain reports from third-party financial rating bureaus,” Friedlander says.

USAA is excluded from our overall ranking because it only provides services to members of the military community. Liberty Mutual and Safeco were also omitted from our rankings because they don’t provide pricing information—one of our key rating metrics—to our data partner, Quadrant Information Services. Some other familiar names also didn’t make the list because those companies didn’t generate enough survey responses.

Top homeowners insurance companies in specific categories

Insurance companies are all different, and so are homes and their owners. Some companies might be a better choice for a specific need than others. To help you find the company that’s a perfect match, we selected the best companies for certain situations and needs.

This list includes all the companies in our insurance-consumer survey—both national and regional carriers—except USAA due to its eligibility requirements..

Progressive saw the biggest jump from 2024, rising from No. 7 to No. 4 for 2025, with an overall score of 4.07 out of 5. This can be attributed to a drop in the company’s complaint ratio with the NAIC. It scored well across the board and was second only to Amica for digital experience.

The vast majority of Progressive customers – 89% – said in our survey that they’d recommend the company. However, rates are above average, so asking about discounts is important.

Pros and cons
Pros:
  • Highly recommended by current customers
  • Highly rated for trustworthiness
  • Most customers plan to renew
Cons:
  • Rates are higher than average
  • Some competitors scored higher for claims handling

Overview

One of the smaller companies on the list, Erie punches above its weight. It was again the top company on our list among regional companies for 2025 with 4.62 out of 5 stars, very close to last year’s rating.

Erie was one of only two companies to earn 100% scores in any category; in fact, Erie earned it in two categories: ease of service and claims handling. It comes highly recommended by current customers, 92.9% of whom plan to renew their coverage. The main downside to Erie is that it isn’t available in all states.

Pros and cons
Pros:
  • Rates are below average
  • Highest percentage of customers who would recommend Erie to others
  • Top score for claims handling at 100%
Cons:
  • Only available in 12 states and Washington, D.C.

Auto-Owners’ excellent customer service, competitive rates, and wide variety of policy offerings land it in second place again this year. The company earned 4.48 out of 5 stars. Our survey found that 90% of customers plan to renew with Auto-Owners, and it has a top AM Best rating of A++.

Home insurance discounts with Auto-Owners are a big part of the company’s appeal, including the auto and home bundling discount. Auto-Owners doesn’t provide quotes online, but those drawbacks don’t keep it from the No. 2 spot.

Pros and cons
Pros:
  • Rated well for ease of service
  • Rates are well below average

Cons:
  • No online quoting is available
  • Not available in all states

The top home insurance companies for price, customer service and more

Whether you are on a tight budget or price matters less to you than excellent customer service, the right insurance company for you is out there. To help you find it, we have gathered the data and listed the best insurance companies for price, policy offerings, ease of service, customer satisfaction, and more.

As mentioned earlier, our category breakouts list all the companies included in our insurance-consumer survey – both national and regional carriers.

Best home insurance companies for cheap rates

There’s no way around it: price matters. Home insurance rates are increasing nationwide, but prices vary quite a bit by company. Of the companies we ranked, Amica had the lowest rates. Allstate was a close second, followed by Auto-Owners.

Company Average annual rate
Amica $2,000
Allstate $2,098
Auto-Owners $2,160

Below is a look at the annual rates for all the top 10 companies in our ranking

Company Average annual rate
Allstate $2,098
American Family $2,504
Amica $2,000
Auto-Owners $2,160
Erie $2,183
Farmers $3,194
Nationwide $2,746
Progressive $3,193
State Farm $2,169
Travelers $3,701

Best home insurance companies for customer satisfaction

Our No. 1 national insurer, Amica, was the top pick for customer satisfaction, one of many top scores that propelled it to the first-place slot. It was followed by Liberty Mutual and Nationwide.

USAA was not included due to eligibility limitations, but it would have placed first if included, with 97.2%.

Company Percent of customers who said they were great
Amica 96.2%
Liberty Mutual 94.7%
Nationwide 92.9%

Best home insurance companies for customer ease of service

No one wants a hassle when dealing with an insurance company, so it’s important to make sure your insurer makes it easy to access things like policy documents and to get service when you need it.

Erie took the top spot for ease of service, followed by The Hartford and Liberty Mutual. An impressive 100% of Erie customers said they were satisfied or very satisfied with the ease of getting service. If included, USAA would have taken second place with 94.4%.

Company Percent of customers who said they were great
Erie 100%
The Hartford 93.8%
Liberty Mutual 93.3%

Best home insurance companies for policy offerings

Getting the coverage you need from your insurance company makes shopping easier. We asked customers to rate their insurer for policy offerings, and Nationwide took the top spot. Liberty Mutual was in second place by less than a single percentage point, and Erie claimed the third place spot.

Company Percent of customers who said they were great
Nationwide 96.4%
Liberty Mutual 94.7%
Erie 89.3%

Best home insurance company for claims handling

Claims are the true test of an insurance company; you pay your premiums to be assured of help when something goes wrong. We asked survey respondents who had filed a claim to rate their satisfaction with their home insurer’s service.

Erie won this category, followed by Amica. Liberty Mutual and The Hartford tied for third place.

Company Percent of customers who said they were great
Erie 100%
Amica 95.7%
Liberty Mutual/The Hartford 90.0%

Best home insurance company for online experience

We asked customers in our survey to rate their satisfaction with the experience of using their insurer’s website and the overall online experience. The winner here was Liberty Mutual, followed by Amica. Progressive, a pioneer in online insurance, came in third.

If included, USAA would have earned the second-place spot at 94%. This was a tight category.

Company Percent of customers who said they were great
Liberty Mutual 94.3%
Amica 92.6%
Progressive 92.3%

Many people choose an insurance company based on recommendations, so we asked our survey respondents how likely they are to recommend their company. Notably, results in this category were lower this year than last year, when all of the top three companies scored over 90%.

Erie is the company most likely to be recommended, followed by Progressive and Allstate. If included, USAA would have ranked first at 95.9%.

Company Percent of customers who said they were great
Erie 92.9%
Progressive 89.0%
Allstate 86.7%

Most trustworthy home insurance company

Trust is a vital but difficult area for an insurance company. Our survey found that trust has improved overall since last year, with all but two companies scoring 80% or better.

Safeco, which is not a ranked company due to a lack of rate data, earned the top spot here. State Farm landed in second place, followed by Progressive. USAA would have narrowly beaten Safeco for first place if it had been included at a score of 95.9%. It and Safeco were the only companies to break 90%.

Company Percent of customers who said they were great
Safeco 95.7%
State Farm 89.4%
Progressive 89.0%

Best home insurance provider for renewals

There may be no greater vote of confidence than to stick with a company. We asked the survey respondents if they planned to renew with their current home insurer, and most said they would.

Safeco again topped the list with an impressive 100% of respondents saying they plan to renew. State Farm took second place, with Erie in third, but it was a close category near the top of the rankings. At 97.3%, USAA would have won second place if included.

Company Percent of customers who said they were great
Safeco 100%
State Farm 93.4%
Erie 92.9%

Notable home insurance companies

Some companies were not included in the overall rankings for several reasons.

Some did not have enough responses in the survey to be fairly compared with the other companies.

The Hartford, Liberty Mutual and Safeco, a subsidiary, do not provide rates to our source, Quadrant. Without rate information, we could not rank them against the other companies either for price or in the overall star ratings. They were, however, included in the category rankings, as they are based solely on the survey.

Finally, USAA scored well in our survey but only provides coverage to military members, veterans and their families. As the company is not open to everyone, it was not ranked against companies that are open to all customers.

How much home insurance do you need?

Choosing the right home insurance coverage depends on a few very basic factors. The first and most important is the replacement cost value of your home.

A standard home insurance policy covers the dwelling (the house and any attached structures) for replacement cost; that’s what it would cost to rebuild it from the ground up. This is the most important coverage on your policy. Other coverages, such as other structures and personal property, are a percentage of that amount.

You need to calculate the replacement cost of your home and ensure that your dwelling coverage is adequate.

You will also need to consider liability coverage. Standard homeowners insurance includes a $100,000 limit, but experts recommend increasing it to $300,000.

Finally, you will choose a deductible, which will affect how much you pay in premiums and be your out-of-pocket responsibility in a claim.

Speak to an insurance expert to help you choose these coverages.

How to shop for home insurance and find an insurance company that’s right for you

A lot of people start with price when shopping for insurance, but there are a few other things to keep in mind.

  • Decide how much coverage you need. Determining your specific needs will help you narrow down the carriers you should consider as well as the different coverages you may need to carry.
  • Research insurance companies. Consider both national insurers (ones that operate in all states) as well as regional insurance companies that write policies in your state. Look for insurers that offer the coverages and services you would use. Check each company’s reputation as you add them to your list of possible insurers, looking at financial stability and customer satisfaction.
  • Request quotes. Be sure that all of your quotes are for the same coverage level and have the same deductible so you can make a fair comparison.

As you consider home insurance companies, it’s worth getting quotes for your auto insurance as well to see if bundling your insurance is the right choice.

“Typically, when you purchase two or more products from the same insurer – such as home and auto – you will reap significant savings on both policies. You should also find out what other discounts you may qualify for when shopping for coverage. Discounts can substantially reduce the cost of your policy,” Friedlander says.

How much does home insurance cost in each state?

Rates vary greatly from state to state. Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska have the most expensive rates, while Hawaii, Vermont and New Hampshire have the cheapest.

The table below has rates for every state. These rates are based on a policy with $300,000 in dwelling coverage, a $1,000 property deductible (with no separate hurricane deductible/coverage) and $300,000 in personal liability coverage.

Final thoughts on the best home insurance companies

The best insurance company for your home will depend on personal factors, including how you prefer to shop for insurance and whether price matters above all else or if you’re happy to pay more for a company’s solid reputation.

The good news is that it’s easier than ever to gather information about homeowners insurance companies and compare rates. Because rates differ so much from place to place, the company that’s cheapest for one person may not be the most affordable choice for you.

The Best Home insurance Companies report for 2025 is a great place to start because we have done all the research for you, but it’s always important to gather your own quotes and consider your choices carefully. After all, you want the best insurance company for your needs, and that’s a personal choice.

Methodology

Insure.com in the fall of 2024 surveyed more than 1,750 insurance consumers (1,011 people with home insurance). The survey was conducted by online market research company Slice MR.

Respondents were asked to name their home insurer and then grade it in the following categories:

  • Customer satisfaction
  • Ease of service
  • Policy offerings
  • Claims satisfaction
  • Digital experience (website/app)
  • Insurance shopping and buying process
  • Billing process
  • Discounts offered
  • Fair rate increases over time
  • Older home coverage
  • Extra coverage included as standard
  • Home and auto bundling

The percentage of respondents who said they were satisfied or very satisfied with their insurer is presented in the results.

We then asked respondents to provide a yes or no response to indicate their agreement with the following statements:

  1. I plan to renew with my current home insurance company
  2. I would recommend my home insurance company to others
  3. I trust my home insurance company

The percentage of respondents who said yes is presented in the results.

The editors compiled the survey results and then selected – based on the number of survey responses – the top companies for further evaluation.

They then collected AM Best data, which measure financial strength, and National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ complaint data, which ranks a company by the number of customer complaints it receives. The Insure.com team identified the NAIC codes of each underwriting company for each carrier and calculated a weighted average complaint index, weighted by the annual written premium. The associated NAIC complaint index score was used in the calculations.

They also collected insurance rate data from Quadrant Information Services.

With the help of Prof. David Marlett, Ph.D., Managing Director of the Brantley Risk and Insurance Center at Appalachian State University, the editors created a rating system to determine which insurance companies were best in each sector. For home insurers, we took the following and gave each a weight.

  • Survey: 40% of the total score (10% customer satisfaction, 10% recommended, 10% renewal rate and 10% claims handling)
  • AM Best: 25% of total score
  • Annual premium: 20% of total score
  • NAIC: 15% of total score

Each insurer was awarded between half a star and 5 stars. No company in the ranking received less than half a star in any category, and 5 stars was the most any insurer could receive.
